There are many good things to eat and we all have our own favorites. For my brother, it is schnecken - my schnecken. Making schnecken is a lot of hard work and although it's my brother's favorite, he won't eat any except mine. I was hoping that when he got married my sister-in-law would have taken over.
That didn't happen, however, so if my brother (and now my niece and nephew) were to contiune to have this wonderful treat, it was up to me to do the baking. My sister-in-law is no dummy, either. She let her friends sample some and concluded that while I was making them for the family, I might was well make them for everyone else to enjoy . . . So we became "the Schnecken Connection !"
Our schnecken are hand-made crescents of sweet flaky, crunchy dough filled with nuts, cinnamon and jelly, rolled in cinnamon and sugar and baked until golden brown - with a slight chewiness from the carmelized sugar and jelly escaping as it is baked.

The ingredients are simple and always quality: flour, eggs, butter, sour cream, sugar, cinnamon, jelly and nuts. I am often asked for the recipe and people are surprised when I tell them there really isn't one.
Our schnecken are a labor of love, each one carefully made by hand. From making and cutting the dough to spreading the filling to creating the small individual crescent shape, it is all done by look and feel.
After a "featured" role in the movie Bird Cage, appearing with an all-star cast including Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, schnecken have become a cultural icon on YouTube.
